Click on that link to the right there smugfuck, 'the real Iraq, fuckers'. Dahr Jamail's website. Then click on 'hard news'. Read the whole of 'All of us participate in the new Iraq'. And weep.
....and weep. I find it truly difficult to acknowledge that humans we consider normal can be wholly evil. When do we learn to stop treating fellow humans as objects to abuse. We have learned nothing from the past, it keeps being repeated - and by so-called sophisticated educated people - the veneer of civilization is gossamer thin.

You don't have to. It's perfectly normal and human to be foolish, deluded, misinformed, weak, scared, self-righteous, conformist and lazy. Given the proper circumstances and one or more of these characteristics, practically anyone could become a war criminal. It doesn't mean they're wholly evil and incapable of good; under different circumstances, they might be perfectly acceptable people.

Phillip – Everything you say rings true, but I find that even more difficult – can young soldiers who have performed war atrocities ever be acceptable people again? Are they not damaged irreparably? I have felt physically sick when reading about some of the actions performed during the Hutu/Tutsi, Bosnian, Vietnam and now Iraqi wars – one of a twelve year old boy hacking off a man’s head. How could anybody respect human life again after such an action?

The problem with people who do these things usually isn't that they have no respect for human life - it's just that they have no respect for the lives of people who aren't on their side; or if they do they can't afford to show it for fear of having their own heads chopped off. Such people must certainly be damaged by their experiences, but this is not at all the same thing as being "wholly evil". Most people adapt to the circumstances. If the circumstances are hideous, many people will behave hideously who would not behave that way under more pleasant conditions. Young soldiers who have engaged in atrocities come back home and become acceptable (if often deeply traumatised) citizens all the time. If they didn't, no country that won a war would be able to function after the victory.
